Interior Design vs Interior Decorating

I get this question a lot.

“So, what’s the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator?”

And honestly, I love when people ask, because it shows just how much appreciation there is for the work that goes into creating beautiful spaces. Since this topic comes up so often, I figured it was time to break it down for anyone else who may be curious!

The Short Answer?

Interior designers focus on both the functionality and aesthetics of a space—think space planning, structural changes, and ensuring that everything works together seamlessly. Interior decorators, on the other hand, focus more on the furnishings, finishes, and overall aesthetic of a space, bringing personality and warmth through color, furniture, and styling.

Both roles are incredibly valuable, and honestly, decorators don’t always get the credit they deserve. They have an incredible eye for detail and the ability to transform a space through layering, textures, and finishes. A beautifully decorated space can make a home feel cohesive, inviting, and full of personality.

So, What Do Interior Designers Do?

As an interior designer, my work goes beyond selecting furniture and decor (though I love that part too!). I focus on the bigger picture—space planning, layouts, lighting, materials, and sometimes even collaborating with architects and contractors to bring a vision to life. Interior designers are trained to understand building codes, structural considerations, and how to create a space that functions as beautifully as it looks.

When I designed a 1,400 sq/ft basement transformation (yes, the one I wrote about here), my job wasn’t just about making it look good. I had to consider how the space would be used, the best layout for flow and functionality, and the right materials to ensure longevity and style. That’s the depth interior design brings—it’s about making intentional choices that shape how a space works for the people living in it.

Where Do Interior Decorators Shine?

Once a space is built and structured, decorators come in to make it feel like home. They have an incredible ability to bring a vision to life through furniture, color palettes, artwork, and styling. A great decorator can take an empty shell of a room and turn it into something magazine-worthy.

Ever walked into a space that just feels right? That’s the magic of expert decorating—every detail, from the pillows to the artwork to the way the light hits a perfectly placed mirror, is considered. It’s an art form, and I have so much respect for decorators who masterfully curate spaces that tell a story.

Why Both Are Important

At the end of the day, interior designers and decorators both play a crucial role in creating beautiful, functional spaces. Whether you’re renovating a home from the ground up or simply refreshing a room with new furniture and decor, there’s value in both approaches.

So, if you’ve ever wondered about the difference, now you know! And if you’re looking to transform your space—whether through a full-scale design or expert decorating—there’s a professional out there ready to bring your vision to life.
